Del Harbeck on Courage, Creativity, and Living Life Unapologetically
Our co-director, Del Harbeck, recently joined Kate Gladdin on the Okay Now What podcast to share her incredible journey—from starting her own marketing business to sailing the Australian coast and embracing life’s big leaps with courage and curiosity. The conversation was a deep dive into resilience, creativity, and the values that shape Marketing Movement into the ethical, client-first agency it is today.
Del explained how her marketing career began out of necessity. Moving frequently as a military spouse made finding steady work challenging, so she started her own side hustle, which eventually grew into Marketing Movement six years ago, now supporting businesses across Australia and internationally.
The podcast also explored the personal adventures that have shaped Del’s perspective. She and her husband recently sold most of their belongings, rented out their house, and lived on a boat for nearly six months, sailing from Perth to Darwin. Along the way, they encountered the unpredictability of the ocean, crocodiles, and all the challenges of living in a small space—but also the freedom, beauty, and growth that comes from embracing uncertainty.
On taking leaps into the unknown, Del shared advice for anyone hesitating to make a big change:
“There’s no such thing as the perfect time. You can be prepared and preparation is key… but there is no such thing as the perfect time. You’re not going to wake up one day and all the pieces fall into place and the yellow brick road is in front of you saying please let’s go now. It’s not going to happen, so you can either wait for something that does not exist or you can make it happen yourself.”
Del’s experience as a business owner also highlighted the importance of collaboration, patience, and consistency. From starting as a side hustle to managing a growing team, she has learned to trust her instincts, outsource when needed, and show up consistently.
“Consistency is the biggest thing. Showing up when you don’t feel like it.”
The conversation wasn’t just about business. Del reflected on acts of generosity and creativity, like shaving her head for leukemia fundraising, raising over $13,000, and pursuing music while living on the boat. These experiences highlight the Marketing Movement ethos: approach life and business with integrity, courage, and heart.
